The Passing of Michael (Mike) Kinnis
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael (Mike) Kinnis, who fell asleep in the Lord, this past Sunday evening in Cyprus. Mike passed away suddenly from an apparent heart attack, while at home with his beloved wife Sophia.
Mike was born in Germasogeia, Limassol in 1950. He graduated from Laniteio Gymasium in Limassol, and after completing his service in the Cyprus National Guard, he immigrated to the US in 1973 to pursue his studies. While working diligently to support himself and pay for his education, he attended Fairley Dickenson University where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in microbiology.
Mike dedicated many years of professional service to Holly Name Hospital. In 1984, he returned to Cyprus where he married the love of his life Sophia Diomedous from the village of Vouni, Limassol. Together they settled in Bergenfield, NJ where they raised their two sons, Nicholas and Antonis, instilling in them strong Cypriot values and a deep Orthodox Christian faith. Mike and Sophia were devoted parishioners of St. John The Theologian Greek Orthodox Church in Tenafly, where Sophia was an active and dedicated member of the St. Philothea Philoptochos Society.
Although he built his life in the United States, Mike never forgot Cyprus. Upon his retirement from Holly Name Hospital in 2018, he returned to his village of Germasogeia, where he joyfully spent his retirement years together with Sophia. Mike and Sophia were long-time active members of Lampousa. Mike was always eager to help at events and especially the Taste of Cyprus where Sophia faithfully always served as one of the chairladies. Mike was a true patriot and an advocate for justice for Cyprus. He was a row model to his sons, both of whom served as presidents of the Cyprus Federation youth group CYCA. He was participating in many other Lampousa initiatives and promoting, in his own way, the injustice that took place in Cyprus in 1974.
Above all, Mike was known for his kind heart, willingness to help others, and always greeted everyone with pleasant smile and kind attitude. His memory will forever remain in our hearts! We take comfort in knowing that he now rests in paradise, inspiring us all to continue spreading kindness and love. We will all miss him dearly!
We extend our sincere condolences to his beloved wife Sophia, his sons and their wives, his grandchildren, and the entire family!
Η κηδεία θα γίνει την Παρασκευή στον Ναό της Αγίας Παρασκευής στην Γερμασόγεια
May God bless his soul and may his memory be eternal!
